I belong to Buckeye United Fly Fishers, a fly fishing club in Cincinnati. I am the guy who often gets skunked or maybe catches a few small trout on club trips to the Smokies. So I was a little apprehensive about doing a trip all the way to Kodiak. Wow, am I glad that I went. A club friend and I were at Saltery Lake Lodge from July 24th to July 30th, 2016. I don't know how the trip could have gone any better. We caught more sockeye than I ever could have imagined plus some dollies, char and a few pinks.

The fish were great fighters and we caught our 10 fish limit easily by noon. Elliott our guide was excellent as a guide and great fun to be around He took excellent care of us in and out of the water.

Chris the cook fed us a wonderful variety of food. We always had a great breakfast with plenty of hot, strong coffee to start the day and dinners were consistently delicious. The accommodations were very comfortable and exactly what you'd want for an Alaskan adventure. Dave the owner was a very gracious host. He also pilots the float plane and is very good at it. He is a highly experienced pilot and in fact flies for one of the Alaskan airlines when he isn't hosting guests at his lodge. I have not taken Saltery Lake lodge off of my bucket list because I would love to come back again. The other guests that were there with us had all been there numerous times and I can see why. It is a great place to go, relax, catch fish and enjoy the beauty of our world.

"Best Trip Ever!"

This was our third Time at Saltery Lake Lodge (2013, 2015, and now 2016). This was the best fishing of all the visits.
After we first landed on Saltery Lake via float plane, we had lunch and then went out fishing on the river. The five of us kept 32 sockeye in the first three hours of fishing! (C-R-A-Z-Y good fishing!) The next day we kept 45. We each had our planned 50 pounds to take home by the third day.

"This was the most enjoyable vacation I've ever been on. Really! I mean it. The staff was there for us and put our needs first. All of the staff was great to talk to and they were the key to the successful vacation. We were like one big happy family." -G. Hacker

You catch a lot more fish than you actually keep. For example, there were three different salmon in the river at this time: Sockeye (red), Humpback (pink), and Chum (dog).
The reason that I’m saying this is because when I tell people that we spend 6+ hours fishing, they might think, “how boring”. But we are constantly catching fish the entire time even though we only keep a max of the limit each day. It is awesome!

Wildlife, great fishing, good food, knowledgeable guides, they have it all.

I just returned from my 5th trip to Saltery Lake Lodge for salmon fishing. Absolutely my favorite destination. My title summarizes the experience well I think. This place is suitable for the accomplished fly fisherman, or a novice fisherman. And the staff are efficient, helpful and knowledgeable.

There is really no way to describe how amazing this lodge is but I will try my best. My family and I booked 5 days here for a family reunion trip. From the moment you land at the lodge via float plane you realize you've just begun the quintessential Alaskan adventure. The lodge is quaint, rustic and nestled perfectly along Saltery lake. The views from all rooms are stunning. I couldn't help but notice how comfortable the beds are which is very important when you spend all day fishing and exploring Kodiak island. Every member of the staff was very welcoming and treated us like friends. The chef served up hearty delicious meals three times a day (she even gave me some of her recipes) and always had coffee ready no matter the time of day.

Our guides were just awesome and helped turn 8 first-time fly fishers into Salmon catching machines. These guys really know their stuff. They were both patient, helpful and above all FUN and even set up a casting competition for a bit of friendly family competition! Everyone at the lodge went above and beyond to make our trip a once in a lifetime experience. It was very hard to leave this place and I'll admit I had to hold back a tear when the plane took off to take us back to the airport. I will be back because it was quite simply the best vacation ever. A huge thanks to Dave and the whole staff, I will be recommending this place to everyone.
